Notes for William Arthur SWEET
Born in Ontario, Canada, settled in Sanilac County in 1858. Served as Supervisor and Justice of the Peace for many years, and held other public offices. He is a veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company "C", of the Michigan 6th Cavalry. He fought in a number of battles, including Gettysburg. He was wounded on July 14, 1863 at the Battle of Falling Waters, Maryland. This was 11 days after Gettysburg, when Gen. Meade's troops chased the confederates to the Potomac, where they caught them as they were crossing. William was wounded in the foot during the battle, and taken out of commission. He was placed in a military hosptial, and was discharged due to his injuries sustained in battle.
